This is an adventure game...or is it?


Whether or not Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy for those of you in Europe) is a real adventure game, it is a fun game. (I'm bummed because I'm typing this post from a Mac, and for some reason, I'm not able to add any links -- I'll try to add them later). There's a great discussion (er, rather discussions) about what game genre Fahrenheit fits into at AdventureGamers.com. For me, it was a great drama, for the most part, and had truly heart-stopping game play.

A lot has been written about game play. There are few traditional inventory or dialogue puzzle elements. There is a dialogue element of a sort, you have to choose dialogue options within a certain time frame, but it's difficult to see what difference your choices make. There are also many "simon" playing elements. Directional overlays appear periodically in the game, and at that time, the player must move the controllers as they are prompted by the colored overlays. My main complaint about this element is that they didn't match with the action on the screen AND they took away your attention from the great action on the screen.

As for the story, it drew me in from the very beginning. You start off as Lucas Kane and you've just committed a murder. You don't know why and must quickly decide how to deal with the crime scene before being discovered by the police. The twist in the story is that you also play as Carla Valenti, the copy who is out to find the murderer. Actions you make as Lucas determine how easy or difficult Carla's job will be.

The story makes a very big jump towards the end that left me somewhat lost, but it was an overall satisfying story.

Pardon my mixed-gumshoe phrases, but: The Game Is Afoot! Someone has been murdered on the train. Someone had to be murdered, this is a murder mystery, after all. But which passenger on this packed train did it? Did the murderer get away? Most likely not, seeing as how the train has been stopped by an avalanche. Will you help Poirot solve the mystery, and save your job, before the snow plows and police arrive? I would continue playing, but it's so darn hot here in Cambridge. I'm looking at the snow in the screenshots with envy!

Reading assignment

Reading list I've been wanting to do this for a while. With all the gaming that I've been doing recently, and with all of the social media I've been devouring, I feel like my attention span has wasted away to almost nothing. And so, I'm beginning a project where I actually read all of my actual, real, sitting lonely on a shelf books. We've accumulated so many books over the years that even though we've started to buy more and more digital books, we still have a small library's worth of books in our house. The project is daunting, so I'm starting small. One small shelf in one of our shorter bookshelves. It's full of classics mostly, with some contemporary fiction. Some of them I've already read, but that's OK. First up is: You know, an light and easy read to start. Happy reading everyone!

Witcher beauty

This game is just so gorgeous. Well, when you're not killing ghouls, foglets, wraiths, and all manner of foul beasts. I could just ride around on my trusty pal, Roach , for hours. The sound work is terrific, too -- wind rustling through the leaves or the sound of rain pelting the ground. Just tried my hand at streaming today. I'm thinking of doing a regular stream on Monday evenings, maybe Tuesdays. Since I'm playing The Witcher now, that's usually what I'll be streaming.
